Volcano Outdoor School

Bring your class or youth group to explore the mountain by day and by night with the Mount St. Helens Institute’s Volcano Outdoor School. Come face-to-face with geologic forces and discover the amazing stories of plant and animal life in the heart of the Mount St. Helens blast zone.


OVERNIGHT EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR GROUPS

  • For school groups and other youth groups. MSHI provides instruction, lodging at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center at Coldwater, meals and snacks.
  • Stay up to three nights.
  • All programs include outdoor exploration.
  • Lessons are aligned with National Science Standards and MSHI will adapt schedules and activities to meet your goals.
  • A minimum of 1 adult chaperone for every 5 youth is required. The chaperones are responsible for the supervision of the group.
  • Arrive at 2:00 p.m. and depart at 12:00 p.m.

Program Options:

  • Geology of Volcanoes– Upper Elementary
  • Advanced Geology: Hazards –Middle School
  • Biology: Life Returns –Upper Elementary to Middle School

Program Pricing:

  • $75.00 per youth
  • $37.50 per adult (required 1:5 adult:student ratio)
  • Includes: 8-10 hours of education, admission to Johnston Ridge Observatory, lodging, dinner, snacks and breakfast.
  • $100 reservation deposit. Maximum 20 youth.

Day Trips

For school groups and other youth groups. On your group’s trip to Johnston Ridge Observatory, stop at the Science and Learning Center for a special interactive 2-hour program. Can't choose just one? Stay with us for up to 6 hours to explore and learn about the mountain through an incredible hands-on experience with our expert staff.
